John Engdahl

John S. Engdahl, a Swedish immigrant, founded Engdahl Top & Body Co. in
1916 in Omaha, Nebraska. Trained in repair & fabrication of automobile tops,
he expanded his business to include the repair and fabrication in all manners of
automobiles and parts. Engdahl's had a full upholstery shop, woodworking shop
for the manufacture & repair of wood frames and parts, and a metal &
paint shop.
Engdahl's manufactured the first armored car in Omaha, build ambulances,
limousines, and even reupholstered seats for Union Pacific passenger cars. John
steered his company through World War One, the great depression, and World War
Two with leadership and innovation, consistently adjusting to the changes in the
industry and technology. He continued to work well into his seventies, having
repaired thousands of cars from Model T's to the muscle cars of the 60's. He
passed away in in 1978 leaving the business to three of his sons, Falton,
Rodney, and Stewart. Engdahl's is now in its third generation of
ownership.
His dedication to his industry and community was evident
throuh his many contributions. He was a leader in his church, president of the
Omaha Lions Club, president of the Omaha Board of Education, president of the
Noon Day Club, and he was knighted by the King of Sweden.
His standard of excellence and honesty in the auto body repair business
is unsurpassed and the main reason Engdahl Top & Body is Omaha's oldest
existing body shop.
