ABRN Article On Various Scams Targeting Collision Shops

Received 6-22-2011 The Nebraska Auto Body Association warns shops to exercise caution to an email where the sender wants to buy a frame machine which is to be paid for by credit card and picked up immediately by the buyer. This may be a scam where a stolen credit card number is used to make the purchase. Buyer may also switch form of payment to a forged cashier's (or other) check. Know who you are dealing with and double-check any credit card and check purchases to be sure that you are dealing with a legitimate buyer and a valid form of payment.

Received 12-16-2010  Top Ten Auto Body Shop Rip-offs of 2010 From Canada

1) Money for a tow truck. Shop receives a call from a new customer wanting to come to the shop. The tow truck driver is demanding cash up front. Can the tow truck driver come and pick up cash from shop owner and then go back to pick up car?

2) Overpayment for repair. Customer brings in cheque for too high an amount to pay the bill. Apologizes and asks for difference back in cash. Cheque is rejected by bank.

3) Shop gets a call from an agency that will obtain their apprenticeship tax credit for them for a 25% fee. It’s a two page form that is easy to send in. With credits at $10,000 per year per apprentice, one store paid $15,000 for this 15 minutes of service.

4) “Change over all your merchant credit card services to a new company for only a 1.29% fee on cards.” Won’t happen- and you can’t get out of the agreement. Yes, a shop can get credit card processing for 1.29%, but you need to generate more than 850 million dollars in credit card sales in a year.

5) “You must have a Health and Safety poster and WHMIS course from us for only $350 or the Ministry of Labour will charge and fine you.” So says the scare call. (Your association can offer this for free.)

6) “You must have a Ministry of Environment Certificate of Approval for waterborne paints. Only $6000. And mandatory or you will be fined” Your association does this for four hundred dollars. Or the consultant who disappears after you pay them.

7) The contractor scam. You pay a person for working in the shop as a contractor. He disappears after a few months and Revenue Canada arrives and says you are still responsible for his CPP, EI and tax withholding. Or the ex-worker files a later claim against you alleging an isocyanate-related illness that you never tested him for. Say goodbye to up to $50,000 in that claim. The other contractor scam is the windshield firm that comes in to install a windshield using your heat light and power. He supposedly hurts himself and the Worker’s Compensation sends the hospitalization, lost wages and costs claim to you for payment because the windshield installation firm didn’t have a Worker’s Compensation account.

8) Wrong Worker’s Compensation account. A number of collision shops who should be paying 3.59 % are being billed as a metal finisher at 9 per cent.

9) Buy a spraybooth online. You pay the money and find out when you go to pick it up or the day of the install that the non-existent booth mysteriously was stolen from the truck the night before. Not their problem you’re told. It’s your responsibility and you must file a claim with your insurer you are told. No refund.

10) The double deductible. Some commercial polices have two deductibles. The customer doesn’t tell you, you assume one deductible, collect it from the customer and let the car go. Cheque arrives from the insurer with both deductibles removed from the cheque.

Received 11-18-2010  809 Area Code Scam This phone scam causes consumers to incur high charges on their phone bills. Consumers usually receive a message telling them to call a phone number with an 809, 284, 649, or 876 area code in order to collect a prize, find out information about a sick relative, etc. The caller assumes the number is a typical three-digit U.S. area code; however, the caller is actually connected to a phone number outside the United States, often in Canada or the Caribbean, and charged international call rates. Unfortunately, consumers don't find out that they have been charged higher international call rates until they receive their bill. Countermeasures: Return calls to familiar numbers only. As a general rule, return calls from numbers that contain familiar or recognizable area codes. You may call your directory assistance or long distance operator to check the area code location.
