|
In 1952, Don started his metal career while serving in the U.S. Navy as an
aviation Metal Smith. In 1956, Don left the Navy and attended Universal Trade
School in Omaha. From 1957 until 1965, Don worked at various body shops in
Lincoln. In 1965, Don got his first big promotion as Body Shop Manager at
Randolph Oldsmobile in Lincoln until 1970 when he opened Wenzl Body Shop at 4315
N. 62nd Street in Lincoln.
Don was one of the early members of the NABA and served as Lincoln area
representative for a number of years. Don also served as area representative for
the ASA ( Automotive Service Association). Other associations include ASC (
Automotive Service Council), I-CAR, SCRS and the IGOA ( Independent Garage
Owners Association). Don understood how important seminars and training could
be. Don attended trade Shows from the beginning and learned a great deal from
them. He was able to improve purchasing, cost controls and how to run a more
profitable shop. Don credits much of his success to his early involvement with
NABA. Don was a true leader in the state. His shop was one of the first to
computerize, the first to purchase a downdraft booth, and the first to purchase
a Smokeeater air cleaning system. Don also was a leader in the world by
purchasing the first ever sold in the world, Celette MC7 Bench. In 1990 Don
joined CARSTAR and in 1993 Don sold his shop to Greg Petersen and Bob Keith of
Silver Hammer CARSTAR Omaha.
Today Don enjoys visiting his many autobody friends, woodworking and of
course a round of golf now and then.
